Hi Mike, Listeros -
I would have my doubts about the claims made in this study as for the appearance in Illinois being the earliest, as no similar studies have been done for Louisianna, or any where south of Illinois along the Mississippi River. While since my stroke my memory is pretty hazy, I think that if one goes to the Poverty Point site reports one will find foods being domesticated into crops, so to speak.
I also think that if you take a look at the native range for the plants found in this Illinois study, their native range was further south, with the exception of the barley.
In addition, I will point out generally, without detailed citations, that most North American societies in the east were arboreally based, based on tree borne nuts and fruits.
