John,

Some archaeologists believe the "pecked cross circles" found at  
Teotihuacan may have served as a geographical symbol for the Street of  
the Dead alignment and it seems that wherever the Teotihuacanos  
marched, they would lay down these markers in alignment with the  
Street of the Dead so that their expansion was in alignment with their  
religious ideology. These markers have been found as far away as the  
Gulf Coast and Guatemala and are in alignment with the Street of the  
Dead. So this may very well explain the Panuco alignment you are now  
observing.
