If you scroll down to pages 46/47 in the Aveni article below, Aveni  
provides a good bibliography on pecked cross circles which appear from  
Uaxactun to Alta Vista in the far north. The column on the left of the  
article allows you to scroll down to the pages you want more easily.  
They appear to have served as some kind of ritual calendrical device  
with crosses made up of 260 dots and with indications of the solar  
year as well.
