Sid:
Turns out I copied the information wrong for the posting. There
are 84 pits in the interior circle of the Cerro Chapin design, not 80
There is, however, a wrinkle to the Cerro Chapin calculation. The
Kelleys got 260 by counting the central pit as "0", otherwise, as they
note, the total count would be 261. I recounted the Purificación
petroglyph pits, and assuming symmetry the total count would be 265,
including the central pit. Nonetheless, each of the Purificación
circle-and-cross petroglyphs would seem to have different total
numbers, although it is hard to calculate on most due to problems of
incomplete preservation. I plan to return to Purificación in 2010 to
recheck the ones we have registered, and to register those remaining
in the area we have not yet seen. With all the interest in this
subject, the Purificación circle-and-cross petroglyphs would seem to
merit a more careful study, and publication. Joe.

The part that I was "missing" was how you got a sum of 260 when the
sum is actually 256?
