A new archaeology series, "Out of Egypt," will air on the Discovery
Channel starting Monday August 24. Some publicity materials are listed
below. This series, hosted by UCLA Egyptologist Kara Cooney, compares
Egypt to other ancient civilizations based on real ideas and research.
It aims to be a notch or two above the normally simplistic and
sensationalist archaeology shows on TV. There are several Mesoamerican
comparisons in these two episodes (including the AZTECS, in addition to
the Mayas).

Series Description: UCLA Professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture Dr.
Kara Cooney leaves the lecture hall for a trip around the world, using
her expertise of Egyptian customs and practices as a baseline to study
how other ancient societies were formed. Each episode begins in Egypt,
where Cooney asks a question that takes her on a fact-finding journey
over continents and cultures to study the Mayans of Central America, the
Incas of Peru, the Singhalese of Sri Lanka and other civilizations.

Out of Egypt: "Flesh and Bone"
Whether it's the finger of a Catholic saint or a mummified baboon in
Egypt, humans have long treasured the physical remains of their hallowed
dead. Kara Cooney examines relics all over the world to find out why we
give such power to sacred flesh and bone.

Out of Egypt" "Shape of the Gods"
The Great Pyramids - icons of Ancient Egypt. But they are not unique.
Pyramids have been built all across the globe. And they have a long and
twisted history. What did the pyramid really mean to ancient people? Why
did they work so hard to perfect it?
