[Aztlan] Owens Valley remains, anyone?

Hello everyone -

I did not cover Mexica culture or history in depth in "Man and Impact in the Americas" for the reasons stated in the book - there was limited impact related material. So I hope I may be allowed the following questions.

While Aztec human sacrifice is a touchy subject, there is no question about their slaughter of the surrounding peoples during their establishment of their empire, is there? A brutality which led those peoples to support the Spaniards when they arrived?

The question I have is: has anyone identified the Mexica's original homeland?

As evidenced by the Lenape and Mushkogean peoples migrations during the same period as the Mexica migration, it would appear that some sort of ecological collapse had occurred in western North America. Such an ecological collapse may go a long way towards explaining some of the more brutal aspects of Aztec culture.
