Hi,
What is apparent from Houston's article on his blog, and the comments
that followed, is that the 13.0.0.0.0 / 2012 date on Tortuguero Monument
6 doesn't need to be a "future prophecy" in order for it to help us
understand how the Maya thought about 2012 and used cycle endings for
such things as local building dedications. Technically speaking, the
text does "reference" a future date, but uses it to consecrate, or
confer authenticity on, a contemporary building dedication. As I pointed
out in my comment, the well-known analogy between "house" and "cosmos"
is apropo here, in reference to the "creation" of a building that is
symbolically a "cosmos" in miniature. The general conclusion that it
'doesn't tell us much' is misleading.
