Listeros,
The 13 ton stone monolith of Tlaltecuhtli found in 2006 by
archaeologist Lopez Lujan and a large cactus monolith more recently
found by Leonardo Lopez Lujan in downtown Mexico City under the corner
of a bookstore were the subject of a talk yesterday at Dartmouth by
Mr. Lopez Lujan.
Listeros may remember that he had speculated that they may have found
the grave site of an Aztec emperor, the first to have ever been found,
due to the size of the Tlaltecuhtli stone and its location and the
meaning of Tlaltecuhtli as a deity. Due to the nature of excavation in
Mexico City because of a high water table and clay-like soil, Lopez
Lujan said, “These series of obstacles have meant that the excavation
has progressed at the speed of an eye-dropper. We have only a few
pieces of a gigantic puzzle that we know we will never be able to
assemble completely.”
So there has been very little progress thus far in ascertaining
whether or not there is an Aztec emperor buried at the site.
