Saludos,

The unfortunate, and hopefully temporary, defacement of the stone sculpture
at La Venta Park points out the importance of recording and documenting
Mesoamerican monumental stone sculpture using the "best available technologies."
Three-dimensional laser scanning of these objects is a non-destructive and
non-contact method that provides excellent data that can be used for research,
analysis, archiving, and replication.

To learn more about this technology and how it is being applied to
Mesoamerican sculpture, please visit our page "MESOAMERICAN THREE-DIMENSIONAL IMAGING
DATABASE" on the FAMSI website
_http://research.famsi.org/3D_imaging/index.php_ (http://research.famsi.org/3D_imaging/index.php)

Recently, we had the opportunity to record some of the original monuments
that are on display at La Venta Parque and the Museo Regional de Antropologia
Carlos Pellicer in Villahermosa, Tabasco, as well as some of the original
stone sculptures that are curated in the La Venta Museum that is at the
archaeological site itself. The data of the La Venta monuments will be available
on-line at FAMSI shortly.

There is also information about 3-D scanning of Mesoamerican artifacts at

We appreciate all your comments, questions, and suggestions.

Thanks.

The vandalism occurred in La Venta Park, Villahermosa, not the La
Venta site. The park has heads and other sculptures that were moved
from the site to protect them. The site now has replicas.
