Dear Colleagues, The UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology will be introducing students to ancient Mexico with a travel study program. Emphasis will be on visiting sites from Teotihuacan, the Templo Mayor, the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, to Monte Alban and Mitla as well as Colonial period conventos including Yanhuitlan, Teposcolula, and Cuilapan. We will be examining processes of ancient craft production through visits with indigenous weavers, potters, and other contemporary craftspeople at various communities throughout the valley of Oaxaca. Courses in reading codices, maps. and lienzos will be held regularly at various locations and guest speakers will explain to students how they have combined ethnohistory, art history, and archaeology in developing their methodologies for reconstructing the ancient and Colonial past as well as the enduring traditions today. If you know of a student who might benefit please pass this information along. Best regards, John
