The specific effect was that Oct. 5, 1582 became Oct. 15.  As to the 
calendar starting on the first of January, I do not really know what 
that means.  When one looks at Spanish documents from the 16th century, 
such as the meetings of town councils and cathedral chapters, from the 
earliest Spanish records in the New World, they begin the new year on 
January 1; that is, for example, 1536 became 1537 on January 1, just as 
we do today.
