Hi John,

I know that your question was directed to Mark Van Stone, but I would
like to make one comment about your statement that most Maya scholars
believe that the "ancient Maya had no concept at all about 2012".

A quick search of Google Books using the words "B'ak'tun" and
"completion" reveals evidence to the contrary
(http://tinyurl.com/nuwuwe). Although some of the books in the search
results are NOT "Maya scholars", the majority of them are academic and
research type books. In addition, each academic book contains
references to many more academic sources that also talk about the Maya
concept of 2012.

Perhaps in its effort to bring reason to the public and in trying to
reign-in those writers with unfounded theories, the academic world has
given the impression that they believe that the completion of the
B'ak'tun is no big deal, but this is not the case at all. Most "Maya
scholars" believe, as is evidenced from the mechanics of the calendar
itself, that the "ending" was a completion and renewal event for
Ancient Mesoamericans. There is consensus in the research that the
Ancient Mesoamerican world-view was cyclical, as is reflected in the
agricultural cycle of maize and of human life itself.
