[Aztlan] Astronomical basis of Long-Count/2012

This is my first post. What I believe would be most valuable would be to
determine what the astronomical basis of the Long-Count is. What we have is
a modern theory without a definite idea of what the Maya were using this
so-called "count" for. This is a request for suggestions and to open a
discussion about this. Once this can be more clearly defined, then the 2012
conversation can take place on a whole new level.
I've seen two worthy suggestions for how the Jupiter/Saturn cycle is related
to the katun and 3-katun cycles. One is 7254 (7200+54) days and the other is
7182 (7200-18) days with Maya values for Jupiter at 399 and Saturn 378. The
54 table in the Dresden (p. 71-73) has been suggested as a correction table.
