I hope that my response is not going to be used in any psychic readings but
I'll take a stab at the question.

The astronomical basis for the Maya Long Count is based upon the time it
takes for the earth to rotate a single time on its axis.  It really is quite
simple.

   - * Pick a numeration system (i.e a base..tens, binary, 20's etc.
   - * Pick a starting point
   - * FINISHED.

Then start dating things like revolutions of Mars, birthdays, Big Bangs etc.
You need the system first.  There must be a zillion numbers that can be
twisted/manipulated to fit in the system.  This does not mean the system was
based upon these numbers. Did you know that 144,000  divided by 20 gives
gives the White Blood Count of an average pre-Columbian Maya?  Does this
fact explain part of the Long Count?
