Indeed that is how it is used here amongst Chicano/Mexcoehuani

I have heard the same from some "Nahuatl" experts. 
But I understand that "noiuhniuh" (in classic orthography, in "modern: noiknij") or "My sibling"  also is used as "my friend" in modern Nahuatl...


Cultural/Linguistic Kids say the darnedest things, no?
