[Aztlan] RE in lak'ech

Thanks, Nick.

As I suspected, it seems that a relatively simple phrase in Yucatec, glossed as "You are my companion," became something altogether different with Domingo Martínez' idiosyncratic translation "You are my other I" ("Eres mi otro yo"). It is the latter, with its "Hunab Ku" associations and spiritual connotations promoted by José Argüelles and Hunbatz Men, that has become common in New Age circles.

Let's see if this helps: From the Cordemex Dictionary of Maya, the root is lak', meaning "companion (compañero), fellow man, neighbor (prójimo)," etc. The prefix in- is the first person singular possessive pronoun, i.e. "my". The suffix -ech is the second person singular subject of non-verbal predicates, i.e., "you are". So the expression means "you are my companion/neighbor/etc."From the same source, etail is "close friend (amigo privado)," and ah etail is "friend, without saying whose (amigo sin denotar cuyo)".Hope that clears the air.Nick Hopkins
