In 1976, Burning Water: Thought and Religion in Ancient Mexico by Laurette Séjourné, originally published by Thames & Hudson in 1956, was republished by Shambhala Publications with an introduction by José Argüelles. I'm intrigued by the effect that Sejourné's work had on New Age thinking and the idea that her work, like that of European archaeologist Marija Gimbutas, was appropriated for purposes that went well beyond her original intentions. I'd appreciate references to sources that provide a critical appraisal of Sejourné's scholarship on Mesoamerican spirituality. I'm especially interested in knowing more about her own reactions to how her ideas were being used outside of academia.
Thanks!
