En grave peligro el Friso de estuco de Ek'Balam

DESDE HACE DOS AÑOS SE MANTIENE EN EL OLVIDO TOTAL

Ek´Balam “El Palacio de las Bellas Artes de los mayas” es un orgullo 
para Yucatán, México y el mundo, pero desde hace dos años no se destinan 
recursos para continuar con las labores arqueológicas.

En su hermoso Friso de estuco (el mejor conservado de toda el área maya 
y único en su estilo por los personajes alados que presenta), 
encontramos la representación del monstruo terrestre y siete personajes 
ricamente ataviados. Es una joya del arte maya. Por cierto, no se ha 
podido llevar a cabo su mantenimiento anual por la ya mencionada falta 
de recursos.

Desgraciadamente, este excepcional Friso corre un enorme riesgo de 
perderse para siempre.

Ek´Balam también cuenta con un importante acervo de Pinturas Murales y 
de Escritura Jeroglífica. Destaca en especial el llamado “Panel de los 
96 Glifos” que es una obra de arte de la caligrafía maya.

Es imperativo que el INAH, el Gobierno del Estado de Yucatán, el 
Patronato CULTUR, y el Gobierno Federal en conjunto, destinen los 
recursos necesarios para que a la brevedad se puedan reiniciar los 
trabajos de campo en esta hermosa zona arqueológica, y que además se 
garantice la integridad del friso de estuco de La Acrópolis.

COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS

Ek’Balam, “the Palace of Fine Arts of the Maya” is a pride of Yucatán, 
Mexico, and the world, but resources for archaeological work have not 
been assigned for the past two years.

On its handsome stucco frieze (the Maya area’s best preserved, unique in 
style because of the winged characters it displays) we find the 
depiction of an Earth monster and seven richly dressed figures. It is a 
gem of Mayan art. In fact, it has not been possible to carry out its 
annual maintenance because of the lack of resources mentioned above. 
Unfortunately, this exceptional frieze runs the risk of being lost forever.

Ek’Balam also has an important stock of painted murals and hieroglyphic 
writing. Especially outstanding is the so-called “Panel of the 96 
Glyphs” that is a work of art of Mayan calligraphy.

It is imperative that the INAH, the Yucatan state government, the CULTUR 
board, and the federal government together assign resources so that 
field work can begin again as soon as possible in this beautiful 
archaeological zone, as well as guaranteeing the integrity of the 
Acropolis stucco frieze.
