Bravo! to Richard Sitler's comments on using the whole 2012-mania to  
engage the public.  I've been lecturing to successive classes of fifth  
graders on the ancient Maya, and I've never seem them get so excited  
as they are over the approach of 2012.  A fine anthropologist I'd be  
if I couldn't ignite that teachable-moment spark into a burning  
interest in the Maya, not to mention fostering an attitude of  
compassion, humility and respect toward other cultures (including New  
Agers).
