Pre-Columbian Society of Washington DC Lecture
“Of Meanings and Metaphors: Seeking the History of the Maya of Chama”
Elin Danien
The history of the ancient Maya can be gleaned only through the
combined discoveries of archaeology, iconography, epigraphy, and
ethnohistory. This illustrated talk shines an interdisciplinary light
on the objects excavated from one region—the Chixoy River Valley of
Guatemala’s Alta Verapaz—to explain the creation of a unique pottery
style, Chama Polychrome, and the events that affected the lives of the
people who lived at the site of Chama in the 8th century.
Elin Danien is curator of the University of Pennsylvania Museum
exhibition, Painted Metaphors: Pottery and Politics of the Ancient
Maya. She is a Consulting Scholar in the American Section of the Penn
Museum, where she was responsible for the recent renovation of the
Mesoamerican gallery and for the publication of its Guide. She
originated and for many years organized the Penn Museum’s Maya
Weekend. She is the editor of the recently published Maya Folktales
from the Alta Verapaz and numerous articles on the Maya and on the
history of Maya archaeology. She was guest editor of a Maya issue of
the Museum’s journal, Expedition.
