 3. Map Identification/Reference (Elaine Schele)

The map Elaine is asking about draws from several sources, as most
compilations do.  One is definitely a map in a National Geographic article
on the Realm of the Maya in the April 1986 issue.  It shows the same trade
routes, except for the Pacific littoral one, the same products with text
instead of symbols, and the same "regional state" boundaries.  The main
difference is the addition of many port sites along the Yucatan coast.
       The trade routes themselves are very broad-brush, just indications
of general trade corridors rather than specific routes.  With that in mind,
the map is not bad as far as it goes, but it leaves out a bit.  Calakmul is
not shown on any trade route for instance, yet it would at least have been
on one between the Rio Candelaria and the Rio Hondo.  One of the sources
Dave Hixson cited may where the port sites came from.
