Subject: [Aztlan] book heads-up
Hola Listeros,
A major new book on the Olmecs has just appeared in Mexico: Olmeca: Balance y Perspectivas. Memoria de la Primera Mesa Redonda. It is a two-volume set accompanied by 3 DVDs in a box that looks very similar to another boxed two-volume set on San Lorenzo published 30 years ago. The Mesa Redonda was held in Mexico City in 2005. Forty-five authors (not including me) contribute to what will stand for a long time as a state-of-the-art wrap-up of Olmec studies. This is a must-have book for scholars and libraries but is a limited (1,000 copies) edition. The citation goes like this: Uriarte, María Teresa and Rebecca González Lauck (editors), 2008, publishers include Universidád Autónoma de México, Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes and Instituto Nacional de Antropología, and New World Archaeological Foundation, Brigham Young University. The ISBN number is 978-607-2-00192-3. Among the many offerings, several papers re-examine the current status of
thinking on what language(!
s) the Olmecs spoke, Olmec writing, and the decipherment of the Isthmian script. There is also a delightful piece by Ann Cyphers that lays to rest the half-baked idea that the Wrestler sculpture is a modern forgery. I am not certain where one can buy it, Amazon.com does not offer it. It may be available at the UNAM Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, the New World Foundation or the INAH websites. Get it while you can.
