Dear Justin Kerr,
I agree, that the question is about Mesoamerica, my answer focused though on the last part of the inicial post:
Snip
I know there are at least a few examples of this because a friend of mine
told me he visited a famous painters house in Mexico and he supposedly had
many prehispanic clay figurines of couples engaging in sex, something I
had never heard of before.
Snip
So my consideration was that the above mentioned ceramics might be of Andine Origine, as i seem to remember such ceramics are known from there. Furthermore I presume, that the famous mexican painter could be Diego Riviera, either his Atelier or the Museum with his collection (I last visited it 10 years ago, so I don't remeber exactly if I have seen such objects in his collection).
Just because ceramic objects have been seen in a mexican painters house in Mexico doesent prove there of mesoamerican origin, as we all know.
