Temple of the Warrior/1,000 column acoustics
Additional rattlesnake sound reports:. (apparently while clapping in front of El Castillo):
"The Mayans also performed tremendous feats of acoustical engineering.
The echoes at Chichén Itzá are world famous: when someone claps their
hands, the echo
that comes back from the Pyramid of Kukulean is the sound of the sacred
quetzal, and the echo that comes back from the nearby pyramid with the
inverted serpents is the sound of a rattlesnake rattling.. Together they
form the Quetzacoatl, the Plumed Serpent."

"Even more amazingly, if you stand directly in front of
the Pyramid of Kukulcan and clap, not only can you hear the reflection
off the Pyramid but there is also another echo off the steps of the
Temple of the Warriors that sounds like a rattle snake. Get your
position right and you will hear the chirp, resembling the call of the
Quetzl bird closely followed by the faint rattle of a rattle snake.
Both the quetzl bird and the snake were scared to the Maya."

"Try this:
Stand below the steps of the Pyramid of Kukulcan and clap your
hands. You will not get a normal echo. Instead you get a multiple set
of echoes that resemble the call of the sacred Quetzl bird. Now stand
half way between the Pyramid of Kukulcan and the Temple of the Warriors
and clap your hands. If you are lucky, you will hear the call of the
Quetzl bird followed by the noise of a rattlesnake."

"Also,
if you are to clap your hands while facing the North side of the
Temple, directly in line with the staircase, the echo of a bird returns
to you off of the Temple and the echo of a rattlesnake off of the
Temple of the Warriors."
