Chancellor’s Distinguished Lectureship Series:
Louisiana State University
“Tombs of the Ancestors: An Interdisciplinary Approach.”
National Academy of Sciences member Jane E. Buikstra
LSU will host renowned bioarcheologist and forensic expert Jane E.
Buikstra for the fall installment of the Chancellor’s Distinguished
Lectureship Series.
She will use a series of four case studies to explore the manner in
which bioarchaeological research enhances our knowledge of ancient
Americans.
In her talk, Buikstra will explore diet, gender and political
relationships through the study of tombs in South Central Andes
region, and will also explore the host-pathogen relationship for
infectious diseases, specifically ancient American tuberculosis, as
revealed through forensic study of skeletal changes and molecular
biology. She will discuss the life history of Yax Kuk Mo, the founder
of the Classic Period dynasty at the ancient Maya city of Copán in
Honduras, highlighting the benefits of a holistic approach that
includes biochemical, skeletal and artifactual analyses. Finally, she
will discuss ways in which new methods inform about the life of the
great Maya king Hanab Pakal, buried in the Temple of the Inscriptions
at the site of the Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico.
