In a presentation at this weekend's Society for Hawaiian Archaeology
annual conference, Scott Williams of Oregon, speaking of ongoing (4
years already) work on a Manila Galleon which disappeared off the
Nehalem Sand Spit in Oregon, noted the repeated geological evidence
of a large tidal wave c. 900 AD.
I don't know where the tidal wave is thought to have originated, nor
do I know enough about tidal waves to have any idea if a large tidal
wave that impacted the Pacific Northwest coast would have been likely
to have been experienced as far south as Central America, but I
thought it might be an interesting bit of data for some folks
involved in California and Central American archaeology.
So there it is,
Martha
