Listeros,
Archaeology Magazine has a report on the Olmec site of El Carrizal in
Veracruz. There are 54 mounds at the site belonging to the Late
Formative (400-100 BCE). Yokes, burials and Remojadas type pottery, an
Aztec jar, figurines, musical instruments were found. Since its last
study in 1961, half of the mounds have been built over or destroyed
and there has been extensive looting. INAH decided to do an
intervention in 2008. In south central Veracruz, where the site is
located, local traditions assimilated Olmec styles until the Terminal
Formative (100 BCE-100 CE) when a new cultural style emerged from
Chiapas and Guatemala. The transition from original to Olmec to the
Terminal Formative can be seen clearly in the artifacts from El
Carrizal. Archaeology Magazine will perform a high tech study at the
site to learn more about the site and its complete chronological
sequence in its interactive dig.
