The current issue of Scientific American, October 2009, pp.,64-71, has a 
substantial article "Lost Cities of the Amazon" by Michal J. Heckenberger,
who has been working in this area since 1992.   If you know some of
the work of Clark Erickson, or remember Charles Mann's _1491_,
the sections on large well-maintained cities seen by the first Spaniards,
this has quite a bit more.   Very nice visions of how they may have looked,
and how they functioned.
