The identification of Nachan as Palenque stems from the speculation of
Ordonez, and then later speculations by Paul Felix Cabrera, John Short,
and Brasseur. It has about as much merit as Brasseur's assertion that
Votan was Phoenician, or that there were Egyptians in Veracruz.
Why did scholars of the time period make such speculations? The obvious
reason was that they didn't have any knowledge of Palenque's real
history or any knowledge of the Chontal people that moved into the
Chiapas-Tabasco region during the Postclassic. Why do people continue to
associate Votan with Palenque? The obvious reason is that they don't
bother to consult the original sources.
