Somewhere I have a copy of a school math textbook that was used several years ago in the Mam area of Western Guatemala. It started out (in Mam) with the "New Math," using dots to represent sets of various sizes, and then after introducing the concept of number, went on to say "Now let's see how our ancestors did it," and went to bar-dot notation and addition and subtraction... I thought it was very effective. George Sanchez' little volume was also a favorite of mine.
