Welcome to Cerro Castillo Archaeological Project
The Cerro Castillo Archaeological Project is an initiative that aims to explore the Moche occupation in the residential sectors of Pañamarca, Nepeña Valley, Peru. All of you are welcome to join us in this exciting opportunity.
The Moche was one of the most remarkable pre-Columbian civilizations. Known for their visually distinctive and elaborate metal and ceramic objects, monumental temples, and complex funerary practices, Moche polities developed along the Peruvian
north coast from circa A.D. 100 to A.D. 850. Pañamarca is an exceptional Moche site that has been little studied, and has been considered as a provincial capital in the Nepeña Valley, the southern boundary of Moche territory.
During this season, excavations will focus on the site’s residential sectors, located east of the monumental compound. We aim to find archaeological evidence related to domestic activities, craft production, and ritual/funerary practices.
I invite volunteers to apply to join us this summer; the cost is listed below, and volunteers are responsible for travel to and from the site. The project includes accommodation, daily breakfast, field/lab materials and tools, tours and visits to
other archaeological sites and excavations in the region, as well as lectures and discussions about Moche and the north coast prehistory.
Season dates: July 5th – August 27th
Length of stay for volunteers: 4 weeks
Cost: GBP 600 ($1,000/€700)
Experience required: none
Application deadline: May 30th. Early applications are advised as
placements are limited.

Sincerely,
Carlos
