Listeros,

In the fall of 2006, paleontologist Rex Saint Onge saw a tree carving in the Santa Lucia mountains of California. It was the image of a 6 legged lizard with a rectangular crown and two large spheres. Saint Onge recognized these as Chumash from the Chumash rock paintings in these areas he had studied previously. He then realized that the drawing was very similar "to the way the constellation Ursa Major — which includes the Big Dipper — related to the position of Polaris, the North Star." These astronomical symbols played a large role in the life of the Chumash. This discovery has helped fuel the remarkable Chumash renaissance going on now.

Time Magazine has the story and a photo of the carving;
