Ethnicity, Caste, and Rulership in Mixquiahuala, México
Conclusions
At this point it is hard to draw any conclusions from this project, as my collection of data is still ongoing and my analysis has only begun to scratch the surface. But it is clear that these data will allow me to analyze the population of Mixquiahuala and the surrounding region on many different levels, from the annual biological rhythms of birth and death, to the individual choices seen in marriages and migration events, and the social and linguistic structures visible in naming patterns and the inheritance of titles. For instance, on what occasions do specific individuals choose to use their mothers surname, their fathers surname, or no surname at all? As I enlarge the genealogical database of the community, I can begin to ask more detailed questions, such as the relative reproductive success of nobles and commoners. At this point, I have collected enough data to begin this analysis, and I look forward to many fruitful results.
