Traducción Comentada de un Manuscrito Yucateco Colonial:
sobre temas religiosos y cosmológicos de un autor nativo

(Exposición del Pater Noster)
ms. págs. 234-316

De este punto en adelante, el material del manuscrito coincide con el material reunido, corregido, y publicado por el Padre Juan Coronel en 1620 bajo el título Discursos predicables. Mientras que la versión del manuscrito y la versión de Coronel son similares, ninguna de ellas pareciera ser una copia estricta de la otra; la relación entre ambas amerita estudios ulteriores. Después de unas veinte páginas faltantes, el manuscrito se reanuda con unas pocas líneas de un prólogo que falta, seguido de la Preparación para cada día. Escrita por debajo de este encabezamiento aparece la fecha Año 1576. Sin embargo, el análisis experto del papel en el cual fue escrito el manuscrito revela que no es anterior a alguna fecha comprendida entre 1760 y 1780.  Que la fecha fijada refleje la fecha del original a partir del cual se hizo la copia, por el momento no pasa de ser una hipótesis.

En su estructura, esta porción del manuscrito se condice con los géneros habituales de la literatura religiosa europea, la Preparación para cada día, que incluye pronunciar las oraciones adecuadas, y que culmina en una detallada Explicación de la plegaria del Señor, tomada frase por frase. Sin embargo, el autor utiliza metáforas sorprendentes para captar la atención de su audiencia. Describe al diablo, bay u ximbal cab cooh, diciendo que anda por la tierra como un león. Compara al diablo con un pescador; mientras que el pescador pone comida como carnada en su anzuelo, el diablo pone al placer como carnada en el suyo, a fin de capturar a las almas (ms. págs. 308-9). El diablo es como un perro sujeto por la garganta, que representa un peligro sólo para aquellos que se le acercan demasiado (ms. págs. 310-11). El alma del hombre es como una pequeña cama; con el diablo en ella, no hay lugar para Dios, y uno de los dos tendrá que caer (ms. pág. 271). El hombre que no reflexiona sobre la palabra de Dios es como aquel que vomita su comida; el sacramento es nuestro único pan cotidiano, con el cual nuestras almas engordan (ms. pág. 295). ¿No estaría avergonzado de su padre el hijo de un batab que mendigara de casa? Es lo mismo si no confiamos en que Dios satisfará nuestras necesidades (ms. pág. 290). Las obras que no se hacen por la gracia de Dios son como la plata que no está marcada con el sello del rey, que carece de valor para comprar el reino del cielo (ms. pág. 265).

El autor ha elegido, asimismo, modelos inesperados de perfección. Al alma habitada por la gracia de Dios él la compara con la casa del rey Salomón, que estaba perfectamente ordenada en todos los aspectos, porque Salomón fue un gran sabio (ms. pág. 270). Según Reyes I 11:3, Salomón tenía 700 esposas y 300 concubinas, lo que hacía de su casa un modelo a duras penas deseable para los franciscanos que buscaban poner fin a la práctica de los matrimonios múltiples entre los mayas. Otros modelos entre aquellos que se eligieron resultan un tanto más familiares. La preparación espiritual es comparada con los ritos llevados a cabo por el constructor, el tallista de madera, y los talladores de piedra antes de iniciar sus trabajos (ms. pág. 236). El papel de los discípulos que le preguntan a Cristo cómo deberían de rezarle a Su padre es comparado con el del masehual que emplea a un escritor de discursos para que le ayude a presentar su caso ante un halalach uinic (ms. pág. 241). Debido a que siempre hacen la voluntad de Dios, la más alta perfección le corresponde a los ángeles y u balcheob caanob, las criaturas de los cielos, las estrellas (ms. pág. 279).

Las palabras cech mehen, tú que eres un niño, se repiten a lo largo de esta porción del texto, sugiriendo que estaba dirigido a un público de jóvenes, probablemente en un entorno escolar. En determinado momento el autor se vale de estudiantes revoltosos en ausencia de su maestro como una metáfora del alma que carece de la presencia de Dios (ms. pág. 268). Con toda probabilidad, estas enseñanzas eran dirigidas por un maestro maya a jóvenes de los que se esperaba que llegaran a ser ellos mismos maestros, para que regresaran a sus comunidades y dieran a conocer la doctrina.

El texto se condice con la "Exposiçion del P[a]ter noster" de Coronel, y comienza en 158v.
