The Glyphic Corpus from Ek Balam, Yucatán, México
Acknowledgements
None of the material presented here would have been possible without the fruitful collaboration and friendship, throughout the past years, of Archaeologist Leticia Vargas de la Peña, head of the Ek Balam Project and Arch. Víctor Castillo Borges, project archaeologist and Field Director. The conversations held with them along many years, their exemplary attitude towards an interdisciplinary work as well as their generosity, have allowed me to study this material in a remarkable atmosphere of academic encouragement and personal satisfaction.
I am also in debt with the School of Anthropological Sciences from the Autonomous University of Yucatán, and particularly with Dr. Francisco Fernández Repetto, its Director, for the constant help and opportunities I was given to coordinate my duties as a teacher and as a researcher throughout my stays in Yucatán.
I want to express my gratitude to the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc., (FAMSI) for funding the project with a grant in 2002, enabling me to undertake the final stage of this research. I am also grateful to the three researchers that endorsed this Project with a letter, and to the members of the Board, for finding it of interest.
To my colleagues and friends in the field of Maya Epigraphy, I am in debt with them for their accurate comments. I want to say thanks to S. Houston, S. Wichmann, V. Bricker, D. Stuart, K. Taube, S. Guenter, D. Graña-Behrens, N. Grube, E. Boot, and M. Zender, for their comments, at different times, on the many aspects of the epigraphic material.
