Jadeite Sources and Ancient Workshops: Archaeological Reconnaissance in the Upper Río El Tambor, Guatemala

Acknowledgements

The 1994 field season of the Proyecto Arqueológico del Jade would not have been possible without the financial support of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies Incorporated (FAMSI). In addition, National Geographic Magazine also kindly provided funds, and we are indebted to Jeanne Peters and Ann Williams for facilitating this crucial support. We wish to thank the Intstituto de Antropología e Historia of Guatemala for providing us with the opportunity to investigate this archaeologically significant area. We owe special thanks to Lic. Guillermo Diaz Romeu, Director General del Partrimonio Cultural y Natural and Licda. Nora Lopez Olivares, Jefa de Departamento de Monumentos Prehispánicos, for providing important consultation during the initial planning of this project. Lic. Héctor Escobedo and Dr. Stephen Houston also offered frequent and welcome advice. Dr. George Harlow, Dr. Virginia Sisson and Russell Seitz freely shared their expertise concerning the geology of jadeite and the Motagua region. Thanks are also due to Dr. Anne Dowd and Erick Rouchette for sharing their archaeological perceptions of jade working in the Middle Motagua region. Dr. Wendy Ashmore also provided valuable information concerning Quirigua and the archaeology of the Middle Motagua. We thank John Cleary, Stephen Gunning, Peter Lee, and William Weber for volunteering logistic information concerning Jalapa and the Quebrada El Silencio region. Finally, we want to acknowledge the major contributions of the late Lic. José Héctor Paredes of the Escuela de Historia de la Univerisidad de San Carlos concerning the archaeology of the Middle Motagua.
