Report of the 1998 and 1999 Investigations on the Archaeology and Iconography of the Polychrome Stucco Façade of Structure N10-28, Lamanai, Belize

Acknowledgements

Archaeological research projects such as this one are never the work of the one individual, but rather, the net result of many contributors. First and foremost I would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Graham, Principal Investigator, for permission to carry out the excavations and analysis, permission to use the plan on page 25, comments, suggestions, helpful information, and for encouraging me to return after my first visit to Lamanai in 1997.  I would also like to thank Dr. David Pendergast for his encouragement, contributions, information, access to field notes, and wit, which kept many of us sane in the field.

I am very much indebted to Claude Belanger for his many contributions to this project. He has been continually teaching me the virtues and pitfalls of architectural recording, and his ingenuity for solving logistical problems as well as his enthusiasm kept me going through some rather stressful times. He is one of the best individuals to work with in the field. It has been a pleasure to work with these three individuals, and I look forward to working with them for several more years.

Another person to whom I owe a great deal is Dr. Dorie Reents-Budet. She was at Lamanai for two weeks this past Summer and it was a great pleasure to work with her. Her comments, suggestions, observations, help, enthusiasm, and, above all, encouragement, have meant a great deal. Thanks also go to Karen Pierce for her help, occasional use of her new digital camera, and friendship.

I also owe a great deal to Mark and Monique Howells of the Lamanai Outpost Lodge and Field Research Centre for their logistical support and coordination with local workmen. Thanks also go to Laura Howard, Norbert Stanchly, Terry Powis, Richard Meadows, Scott Simons, Nazario Ku, and Lisa LeCount for their help and suggestions. Many thanks also go to Melissa Knight for assisting in the stucco excavations in Operation 4, and Heidi Ritscher for database information and her excavation assistance. Last, but not least, I would like to acknowledge my workmen, Federico Vasquez and Brian Ramirez, the workers from the lodge, Rolando and Estuardo, and the workmen who removed the plaza core this Summer: Israel, Felix, Ricardo, Victor, Victorino, and Miguel.

A grant for this work was awarded by the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. (FAMSI) to fund a preliminary analysis of the collection as well as minor excavations on Structure N10-28.
