Northeastern Yucatán Project:
Archaeological Survey in the Northeastern Corner of Yucatán, México
Site 1
It is located slightly over 9 straight kilometers northeast of Colonia Yucatán. One gets there using the same road that leads to the archaeological site of Rancho Grande, and it is located after the modern town of Manuel Cepeda Peraza (Maderas Blancas), 2 kilometers towards the northeast. It is easily found because the archaeological remains are seen at both sides of the sacbé, north and south.
The main structure is located east of the road, at a distance of 50 meters, and is visible from the road (Photo 28). It is a platform of approximately 3 meters high, with dimensions of 15 meters long and 10 meters wide, with a longitudinal axis that runs in an E-W direction. It was in the surroundings of this platform where the small sample of surface ceramic analyzed was found. This structure lies in the grazing fields of a modern ranch.
At the front of this main structure, north of the road, there is a rejollada, not too big in size. East of the rejollada, several low platforms were visible, and in one of them, the fragmented metate was recovered. Also, in the adjoining area of the main platform, other smaller structures that probably formed an entire residential area were spotted.
