Las Preguntas que el Emperador Adriano hizo al Infante Epitus
(The Questions that the Emperor Hadrian asked the Infante Epitus)

El texto maya yucateco abre en el medio del encuadre de la historia de Las preguntas que el emperador Adriano hizo al infante Epitus. Siendo un ejemplo del género popular medieval de Literatura de Sabiduría, presenta una serie de preguntas y respuestas, algunas en forma de acertijos y enigmas, sobre temas religiosos, filosóficos y cosmológicos, planteados por un superior, en este caso el emperador, y respondidas con inteligencia por alguien de un status aparentemente inferior, el Infante Epitus. 1 La versión yucateca se asemeja notablemente a un texto impreso en Burgos en 1540, 2 y he usado ese texto como comparación. Adriano/Epitus fue prohibido por la Inquisición en 1559, no debido a ningún contenido herético específico, sino por tratarse de un trabajo anónimo en lo vernáculo. 3
Como herramienta pedagógica para ser usada en el período inicial de evangelización, Adriano/Epitus presenta un panorama general memorable y entretenido de la "sabiduría" europea, una elección adecuada para una audiencia yucateca que sabía apreciar los acertijos y el lenguaje ingenioso en general. 4 El encuadre de la historia agrega un elemento de misterio y una sombra de escándalo a los orígenes del inteligente Infante:
"En tiempos del Emperador Adriano, nació en el oriente un niño Infante5 quien fue llamado Epitus. Puesto que secretamente era de noble cuna, lo cual, de saberse, acarrearía gran vergüenza, se ordenó que fuera abandonado en una isla en el océano. El día en que fue abandonado, Nuestro Señor, deseando protegerlo, envió pescadores a esa isla, donde encontraron al Infante envuelto en ricos ropajes, y vieron que se trataba de una hermosa criatura, y entonces lo llevaron con ellos a tierra firme y lo presentaron ante el príncipe de esas tierras. Y el príncipe, al ver una criatura tan bella, y envuelta en tan ricos ropajes, que fuera hallada de esa manera, pensó que debía ser de una alta clase social, y que había sido por vergüenza que la habían abandonado. Lo envió para que fuera criado por un arzobispo, quien era una muy noble persona, con una muy buena vida. El arzobispo ordenó que fuera criado muy bien, y cuando el niño Infante tuvo la edad suficiente, lo envió con un gran sabio . . ." 6
