Notablemente popular en la Europa medieval, las quince señales que preceden al juicio aparecen en diversos trabajos, desde The Golden Legend de Jacobus de Vorágine, a una versión rimada de Gonzalo de Berceo, un contemporáneo de Alfonso X.85 La Iglesia prohibía toda especulación respecto de la fecha exacta del Apocalipsis; la literatura que detallaba los quince días finales satisfacía la fascinación por este tema, sin llegar a violar la proscripción.
Para los franciscanos milenaristas que llegaron al Nuevo Mundo en el siglo dieciséis, los tiempos finales parecían inminentes. La segunda venida había sido demorada para dar a toda la humanidad la oportunidad de escuchar el evangelio: la conversión de los indígenas satisfacía ese requisito.86 El Domingo de Pascuas, día de la resurrección de Cristo, presagia Su retorno, momento en el cual Él habrá de descender a la tierra rodeado por los instrumentos de Su pasión.
La creencia apocalíptica ha persistido entre los conservadores mayas cruzob, quienes resistieron y se mantuvieron fuera del control del gobierno y de las autoridades religiosas.87 Durante el tiempo que Paul Sullivan pasó en Tuzik entre 1978 y 1980, le fue mostrada una copia escrita a mano de las quince señales, que él reconoció por un estudio que había realizado tiempo atrás de una fotocopia del Chilam Balam de Tuzik.88 Después de un lapso de cientos de años, estas señales se mantienen notablemente similares a las que aquí mostramos. La preocupación por los días finales y el regreso inminente de Cristo también es inspiradora de la tradición oral. Nikolai Grube registró las palabras de Cecilio Can Canul, antiguo guardian de los libros sagrados de Tixcacal Guardia, "Pero mu xantal, muy pronto, será el regreso de Cristo, el fin de los años, el fin de la era sobrevendrá. Cristo se conectará, el Cristo Maya se conectará, la kuxa'an suum, le cuerda viviente, con el cielo una vez más; entonces las cruces parlantes estarán tan cerca que todas comenzarán a hablar."89 Esta reconexión de todas las cruces del mundo está predicha aquí en la treceava señal, cuando "las cruces brillarán en adelante, las de los bosques como así también las de los pueblos, y sus rostros se iluminarán como el sol."
El registro de eventos cataclísmicos dentro de una secuencia temporal estructurada caracteriza los géneros indígenas mayas, tanto la cuenta de katunes como las historias de anteriores fines del mundo como las que aparecen en el Popol Vuh. Así, las quince señales proporcionaron nueva información en una forma de algún modo conocida para una audiencia maya. Irónicamente, las creencias milenaristas enseñadas por los franciscanos90 no sólo han resistido el paso del tiempo, sino que también han proporcionado una fuente de identidad y de resistencia para los mayas cruzob, quienes se han considerado a sí mismos como el pueblo elegido por Dios, guardianes de las cruces parlantes que habrán de anunciar el regreso de Cristo.91
