(Examples Concerning the Most Sacred Sacrament of the Altar)
En su Index Exemplorum, Frederich Tubach da la siguiente definición, "el exemplum es un intento por descubrir en cada suceso narrativo, personaje, situación o acto, un signo paradigmático que corrobore ya sea la creencia religiosa y el dogma de la Iglesia o que haga un esbozo de males sociales y peculiaridades humanas" (1969:523). Las cinco siguientes historias morales tienen que ver con recibir la comunión. Sin embargo, las tres primeras abordan el tema con la descripción de un mal social que pone a los individuos en una situación inapropiada para recibir el sacramento. La primera historia tiene que ver con un hombre considerado ruin en su comunidad por fornicador, que le miente al sacerdote y le oculta su pecado. La hostia consagrada se le pega en la boca y no logra tragarla. La segunda trata de una mujer que fue tomada como concubina, y que no puede liberarse de su rencor hacia aquellos que abusaron de ella. No puede abrir la boca en presencia de la hostia, muere en estado de pecado, y es llevada por los demonios. En la tercera historia, una mujer enferma le vuelve el rostro al sacramento, así como ha vuelto el rostro a sus enemigos, al no poder perdonarlos. También ella es llevada al infierno. Así, estas narraciones condenan la falta de castidad y acentúan la importancia de una confesión completa y de un corazón puro para poder recibir la comunión.
Los dos ejemplos finales ilustran el carácter milagroso de la hostia, y cómo pasa de ser pan a transformarse en el cuerpo viviente del Cristo Hijo. Un niño durante la misa ve un hermoso Niño, resplandeciente en la mano del sacerdote cuando éste eleva la hostia, un Niño que luego el sacerdote devora. Más tarde, cuando el sacerdote regresa a una casa de huéspedes administrada por el vigilante padre del niño, el hijo se esconde del cura, temeroso de ser también él mordido. Este resuelve todas las dudas de su padre sobre el carácter divino del sacramento. En el relato final, un judío se esconde entre los cristianos para presenciar cómo San Basilio da la misa. También él ve a un Niño de rostro radiante en la hostia, y corre a su casa para convencer a su gente de que deben convertirse a la verdadera religión.
Parece probable que estos ejemplos hayan sido traducidos al yucateco a partir de una colección de los franciscanos de narraciones en español de este tipo. En este conjunto, y en el conjunto más extenso de ejemplos que le siguen, es interesante observar que las acciones llevadas a cabo por mujeres figuran de manera prominente.
